From Paul Emsley
Finlay Wild (Lochaber AC) won the Goatfell Hill Race in fine style, with a time of 1:15:56, a time that has only been bettered on the current course by Andy Peace in 1994. Veteran Categories were won by Mark Harris (Fife AC – M40 – 1:21:42), Stewart Whitlie (Carnethy – M50 – 1:22:43), Ewan Paterson (Moray Road Runners – M60 – 1:44:44) and Charlie Love (Dundee Hawkhill Harriers – M70 – 2:26:46). Charlotte Morgan (Carnethy) took the honours in the Ladies’ Race, winning in 1:34:50.
Many of the competitors asked me to thank all the marshals, particularly the Arran Mountain Rescue Team, who had to endure rain, hail and gale force winds for several hours.

51 competitors turned out for this ‘uphill only’ race. With heavy rain the previous day, the streams were full and made the three crossings a bit hairy and took some of the runners by surprise....

You have the exciting chance to race to the top only, in this Saturday 11th May’s Glas Tulaichean at the Spittal of Glenshee. The 7.2km course climbs 670m to finish at the summit cairn, with the course record of 33.50 held by Bobby Quinn, Scotland’s most successful uphill racer, and the fastest female time of 38.50 set by former world champion, Angela Mudge.
Entry is on the day, and open to all athletes over 17, but the race’s profile is boosted this year as it forms the trial race for selecting Scottish teams for the British Athletics Senior Home International event (to be held in Keswick on 25th May). To be eligible for selection athletes must have been born in 1993 or earlier (full selection criteria are in the International Handbook).

‘Usually blessed with good weather’ is how the web site puts it. Not today. Today the weather got as bad as it’s ever got since its inception in 1988. It was a good start to the day, record numbers for a non-British Championship race, 206 runners, no wind and sunny. By the time kick off time arrived, it was cloudy, but certainly nothing out of the ordinary. By the time 15:30 arrived, the elements had closed in; near zero temperatures, gale force winds, heavy rain/sleet. 2 runners and a marshal taken off the hill near Stuc a’ Chroin summit and several runners suffering from varying degrees of exposure...
